my kingdom for some earplugs
This morning the bags under my have have bags too. Last night was a cacophony of sound preventing me from sleeping. I am a very light sleeper to begin with and wake at the drop of a stinking hat. I was already having overly weird dreams because I had been reading Cold Mountain then I watched Medium. I fell asleep around 10:30 and I left the window open because the days have been warm and the nights lovely and cool. Around 1 am I started dreaming about dogs attacking me and I woke because our three dogs, who sleep with us, were whining and restless. That's when I heard it, the creepist howling sounds and very close by. Grumpy came into the room and said, "Can you hear the coyotes howling?" I told him that they had awakened me. We stood in the window listening to the coyotes howling and the neighborhood dogs barking in a frenzed response. The coyotes were right on the other side of our wall in the street. It was sort of creepy but it also made me feel bad because we have encroached on their habitat so much. Finally, around 2, they moved on and I tried to go back to sleep. Grumpy fell right to sleep and right to snoring. Just as I started to doze off Little Duck started crying and wouldn't let up. He is sick and teething so for the last week or so he gets up at least 2 times a night. Lucky me. Anyway, I brought him out to the family room and parked myself in front of the tv. I proceeded to watch one of the cheesiest movies I have ever seen. Around this time, the dogs came from the bedroom and wanted to go outside. They were pacing the wall and sniffly madly. After Duck went back to bed I was once again wide awake. I decided to sleep on the couch around 3 with the sounds of our cats hissing and chasing each other and the cat door out to the garage opening and closing every five seconds. Little Duck started crying again but stopped just as I stopped swearing and decided to go check on him. So once again I found myself wide awake on the couch. At 5 Little Duck started crying once again and I had to bring him out to the family room. He promptly fell asleep face down on the carpet. I fell asleep again but woke up every twenty minutes or so because I was afraid I would oversleep and Little Bear would miss his bus. Well, I overslept anyway. I usually get up at 6:45 to get the kid ready. This morning I got up at 7:15 and only because there was a group of doves cooing on the roof.
I'm pretty sure it was my dad telling me to get up. I don't think I have told the story of my family and our connection to doves, but that's a story for another day and after I've had a nice long nap.
