almost famous- part deux

Other famous folk encounters

Marion Ross aka “Mrs.Cunningham” from Happy Days
Pheasant Run Resort – Illinois
Again I was little probably about 11. She was there doing a play while we were staying there. She walked by me and my mom and smiled and said hello.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – I had a friend who is a DJ and she took us backstage to several shows. They were nice enough but we actually ended up sitting on the tourbus all night laughing and talking with their opening band, The Rembrandt’s (think Friend’s Theme song). They were really nice guys and hilarious too.

The Verve Pipe – We started going to see Brian Vander Ark (lead singer) play at a restaurant called Carlos Murphy’s, then he was in a band called His Boy Elroy, then Johnny with an I, Then boom Verve Pipe. I’ve seen them a billion and six times and I seriously thought they would get way more famous than they did, because really, they were an amazing band and generally good guys.

The Wild Colonials – Good band. They opened for Toad the Wet Sprocket the first time I got to meet them.

Jim McMahon – Former Quarterback, Chicago Bears. Miraculously he was at the Vogue one night and the DJ, a good friend, recognized him and knew I had been a fan so he sent me his way. He was with this group of orthopedic surgeons and I made the most embarrassing of stupid fan faux-pas. For some reason, I became star struck. I said something to the extent of, “I was in love with you when I was 13.” This didn’t thrill him in the slightest and he was like, hey thanks for making me feel like I’m 90. He gave me an autograph anyway.

Dan Marino
– Lauderdale-by-the-sea, FL
He opened his little hot dog shop right down the street from our condo, so we went to the grand opening and there he was.

Eddie Vedder – Halloween party, Seattle
To this day I’m not sure if it was really him or not. No one would say for sure. It was either Eddie Vedder not in costume or a guy who looked A LOT like him, being Eddie for Halloween. I am even more confused because there were a ton of music industry type folks at the party, so who knows.

John Corbett
– the butt grab
I’ve told this story before. See August 30, keep your hands inside the ride entry.

John Kennedy jr.–
I’ve also told this story before. See August 22, hot to trot entry.

Freddy Garcia – 1999-2000
He used to date the receptionist in our office for about a year or so. He called all the time and we would stop into the office periodically. He was very nice, kind of shy and his English wasn’t that great so I don’t know how much he understood. But he happened to be in the office the day I played the tape of my stand up comedy routine for the office. He laughed and said I was funny, but I think he really thought I was crazy. He also let me put on his big honkin’ blinged out necklace and do a white girl rap for him. I made him nervous.

We were supposed to meet Van Halen (Hagar) in Detroit but my car overheated outside of Battle Creek and we had to go home on a wasted Minnie Thins buzz.

I also went to high school with an amazing athlete who went on to play football for the Raiders and the Cardinals and a guy who has a controversial book of supposed non-fiction on the bestseller list at the moment. But I don’t think they count since they weren’t famous when I knew them.

Dude! I was a total freak for Verve Pipe! I saw them countless times locally and they (for some reason) remembered me. "I've suffered a heeeeead injuryyyyyy!"

Oh man, that takes me back!
