music for the masses

Today my blog entry is stolen straight from New Planet (who of course borrowed it from Neil)

You are supposed to name your top 30 favorite songs of all time with only one song per artist (what a bitch!).

So here goes: (in no particular order - and of course this totally reflects my frame of mind at this particular juncture). And you will see, as many of you already know, I am mostly and forever trapped in the 80's, musically anyway.

1. Silence - Delirium
2. Running Up That Hill - Kate Bush
3. The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove - Dead Can Dance
4. But Not Tonight - Depeche Mode
5. The Chauffer - Duran Duran
6. Never Tear Us Apart - INXS
7. Inbetween Days - The Cure
8. Must I Paint You a Picture - Billy Bragg
9. Waiting for That Day - George Michael
10. Jane Says - Jane's Addiction
11. Blame It on Me - Bare Naked Ladies
12. Suedehead - Morrissey
13. Something About You - Level 42
14. Candy - Iggy Pop & Kate Pierson
15. Happy Phantom - Tori Amos
16. Possession - Sarah McLaughlin
17. Wouldn't It Be Good - Danny Hutton Hitters
18. Brilliant Mind - Furniture
19. Be Near Me - ABC
20. The Sun Always Shines on TV - A-HA
21. This is the Day - The The
22. Sometimes - Erasure
23. Temptation - New Order
24. Love My Way - The Pyschadelic Furs
25. Space Age Love Song - Flock of Seagulls
26. It's a Sin - Pet Shop Boys
27. I drove All Night - Cyndi Lauper
28. Dance Hall Days - Wang Chung
29. Running - Information Society
30. In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel

They also had some floaters bubbling below the surface so I'm including some too...

Cuts You Up - Peter Murphy
Living in Oblivion - Anything Box
Shape of My Heart - Sting
The Promise - When In Rome
Tenderness - General Public
Forever Young - Alphaville

Okay, I have to stop now. This is too hard. I love too many songs to stop at a measly 30!

I don't know how you did that. I start having a mental breakdown any time I try to come up with a list of favorites. I've been working on a burned CD for like 3 years that I've titled "The Soundtrack of My Life," and it's so hard!

I love Anything Box and Information Society!! Haven't heard those for years.. Good stuff!! I feel a mixed tape, I mean CD coming on.

Peter Murphy but no Bauhaus? And no Bowie? Fie! =)

Cuts You Up is a good song, my fav of his is The Line Between The Devil's Teeth (And That Which Cannot Be Repeat) I suppose picking just one Bauhaus song would be difficult... Bela Lugosi's Dead is too obvious. Telegram Sam, Silent Hedges and Slice of Life have always been favorites.

i know what you mean - i had a shortlist of 300 songs , almost had a breakdown getting them to 30...

everyone keeps dissing me for my "one song per artist" rule! problem being my top 30 would be made up solely of Madonna otherwise....

Neil : )

Someone was an 80's/90's girl weren't they? Brilliant choice in music. Once I saw Jane's Addiction, I think I fell in love... ;0)

melanie - i just did it quick without really thinking too hard. it's now this morning that I'm thinking, oh man I can't believe I didn't put in...(insert about 600 song titles here).

chas - oh dear mixed tape! we are old.

alex - i know, i know, but you you give it a whirl, it's hard! it will make you cry!

neil - i dreamt about this damn list last night and how could i forget madonna!! jesus i have failed!

epi - you've got that right! i don't think i've liked more than about a dozen of the songs made over the last 10 years. it is my dream to remain trapped in all the movies John Hughes ever made. *sigh*

So, after looking at everyones lists, I feel that my choices are rather, well, stupid. You've got some good stuff in there.

Sigh.
